Keyword Selection
Use the keyword research tool to figure out your most important keywords and phrases.

Do you know what keyword phrases your customers are searching for?

Ensure that you are one step ahead of the competition by selecting the right keywords & phrases.

The purpose of your website is the either sale a product or service or provide information of some sort.  You must have visitors to accomplish whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.  You can either pay per click or get your traffic for free.  Choosing the right keywords to target is extremely vital in your online success.

Personally, I think it's the single most important area you should concentrate on.  Well in the beginning at least. Optimizing for the right keywords can mean doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled visitors to your site.  Most websites fail because of bad keywords or keyword optimization techniques.

The problem here is what are people actually typing into the search engine?  Think specific "keyword phrases" and not "keywords".  Do not focus on general keywords as the competition is out of this world.  You stand a much better chance of ranking higher for keyword phrases.  The traffic also will be more highly targeted and you should see higher conversion rates (CR).  A great place to start is with your competition.  Find out what keywords they are using in there Meta Tags.  Just do a quick right click / view source.  Make sure these keywords are relevant to your site before you start optimizing for them.

So how do you go about determining which keywords to target.  Well, you could brainstorm and try to figure what people are searching for or you could you a tool to assist you.  One such tool is the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool.  Just type in any keyword and out will come the number of times that keyword was searched the previous month.

This is a good tool to gather baseline information however quite honestly I wouldn't recommend you use it.  A lot of people use this free tool to check their own ranking and placements in the Overtures Pay Per Click partner sites, plus it represents only a small portion of keyword searches.  If you are serious about starting your website out on the right foot I suggest you take a look at WordTracker as no other tool parallels to this keyword suggestion tool.  This is an online keyword database tool that generates search term phrases based on over 30 million search queries.  You no longer have to wonder if the keywords you have chosen are the right ones for your site.

This is the best tool, hands down than any other tool I have ever used. Period. Wordtracker is based on meta search queries made by ordinary people searching the web everyday, meaning the keyword and key phrase combinations found are much more reliable than the pay-per-click listings generated by the Overture suggestion tool.  This tool not only shows how popular keywords are but also how much competition the keyword has. Genius! You will never again have to guess which keywords will work for you.  Here's how WordTracker works:

1. Enter in a keyword you think people use and WordTracker will give you a list of related keywords.

2. Select keywords you would like to research from that list. Keep doing this until you have about 50 keywords.

3. The next feature of WordTracker is where it all comes together.  Sumantra Roy developed a system called Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI of a keyword.  This sophisticated calculation determines the keywords popularity in relation to the keywords competitiveness.  This is how you will determine which keywords are most effective.  Check out the demo at the Wordtracker website.
