Image Map Issues

The Why

Everywhere I read about image maps, I keep hearing the same thing, "Stay away from image maps because the crawlers can't spider them".  Ok, yes this is a true statement however there is solution to this would-be problem.  I'll explain.

The Fix

If you choose to use image maps in your site design, it is very important to use text links to link to important sections of your site. I recommend that you create a parallel set of text links at the bottom of the page your image map is on. 

Also, another great fix is to create a single site map that links to all of your pages. I generally put this site map on all of my pages to ensure crawlers get the "meat" of my site and also to help my visitors navigate the website easier.
